V. FOODS ARROUND THE WORLD
5.1
Read the text and try to understand what nationality these dishes are from?
Some people say that the food of this nationality is
tasteless. For breakfast most people have cereal or toast and tea or coffee.
For lunch they have a sandwich or fruit. Supper must be light. Main courses in
a restaurant give a choice of roast beef, fish pie served with new potatoes and
fresh vegetables.
They eat a lot and they love junk food. Their diet is
not healthy; they fry a lot and eat fat, sweet food. They say they live on
hamburgers, hot-dogs, chips and coca-colas.
They enjoy a variety of traditional cookery, as well
as favourite imported dishes. The most
popular traditional food is borsch, holubtsi, varenyky and other tasty dishes.
They prefer home-made food.
What country are these dishes from?
5.2 Read
the following clues and write what food/ dish is describing

balls or rolls of vinegar-flavored cold cooked rice served with a garnish of
raw fish, vegetables, or egg.

cabbage, mushrooms, meat or cheese or with cherries as a sweet dish.
5.3 Look through the text and
find the following information.
Hamburgers.
The word hamburger comes from the German city of
Hamburg. In the Hamburg area the Tartars first made a sort of hamburger in the
Middle Ages. They used to sit on pieces of meat when they rode horses; so the meat came our flat! But
the Americans invented the modern hamburgers about 100 years ago. Now they
forget the origin of word-and make hamburgers; fishburges; beefburgers;
eggburgers... in fact anythingburgers.
Hot dogs.
Long thin sausages come from Frankfurt in Germany. They are called ‘ frankfurters’.
Put one in bread, and it becomes a “hot dog”. Why? Well, the sausage looks like
a long thin German dog, a “dachshund”. Add chilli, and it tastes hot!
Fish’ n’ chips.
150 years ago in
England, mothers and fathers in poor families had to go out to work in
factories. There was no time to shop an d cook. So they bought fast food in the street. The
most popular was fried fish with a piece
of bread. Then in the 1870s pommes de terre a la mode came from France. The
English called them “chips”. Soon there were fish’n’chips shops everywhere in
working-class areas. They used to put fish’n’chips in an old newspaper-with a
lot of salt and vinegar on top. Today fish’n’chips are still very popular in
Britain- but they come in clean white paper bags! (In the USA they are called
French fries.)
Fast food.
Imagine you work in an office in New York. You are
busy, and your boss is shouting at everyone. You have just a quarter of an hour
for lunch. You go out into the street. You want to order, pay, get your food,
eat it, buy a newspaper, wash your hands, talk to your
friends and … get back to the office. All in fourteen and a half minutes! So
what do you eat? Fast food, of course- a sandwich, a burger or a slice of
pizza.
The first fast food.
The Earl of Sandwich was the head of the English Navy
in the American War for Independence. He loved playing cards and he didn’t like
stopping for lunch. So, in 1762, he invented a snack made of two pieces of
bread with something in the middle. What was it called?

Pizza has a long
history. The ancient Greeks first had the idea of putting vegetables on large
flat pieces of bread and pizza ovens have been found in the ruins of Roman
cities.
But for centuries
one important ingredient was missing - the first tomatoes were brought to
Europe only in the 16th century from South America. In the 19th century Rafaele
Esposito, a baker from Naples, began to sell the first modern pizzas. He was
asked to bake a special pizza for a visit by the Italian King and Queen in
1889, and so the first pizza Margarita was created, named after the Queen.
Pizza became a
favourite dish in Italy, but only after the Second World War, when thousands of
American soldiers went home from Europe, pizza really became an international
dish. Soon there were pizzerias all over the USA, and American chains like
Pizza Hut, spread the idea around the world. Today the average American eats
over 10 kilograms of pizza a year and the world's largest pizza (measuring 30
metres! across) was baked not in Italy but in Havana, Cuba!

century BC. Legend says that this famous leader enjoyed icy drinks. People in
China were eating ice cream, invented there in about 2000 BC. It reached Europe
in about 1300 when the Italian traveller Marco Polo returned with recipes from
the Far East. When Marco Polo returned to Europe from China in 1295 he told of
exotic kings who enjoyed this strange frozen dessert. To prove that his stories
were true he producedrecipes. By the year 1500, cream had been added to the
recipes, and rich Italians couldn't get enough cream-ice. Cream-ice was brought
to France in 1533 with the help of Catherine de
Medici of Italy,
By
the 1700s, cafes specializing in ice cream had appeared all over Europe. But
few regular citizens ever tasted ice cream for it was very expensive and only
rich people could buy it. One invention brought ice cream into the lives of
ordinary people: the refrigerator invented in 1803. Ice cream shops immediately
spread across the country and soon ice cream could be bought every day. All
could now enjoy what once was the food of the kings and presidents.

5.9 Top Five Strangest Foods From Around
the World
1. What’s the strangest food you have eaten in your
life?
2. What strange food do you know?
1. Fried - brain
sandwiches
Long before the
era of Mad-Cow Disease, a sandwich made from fried calves' brain, thinly sliced
on white bread was a common item on the menus in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. The
sandwich is still available in the Ohio River Valley, where the brains are now
heavily battered and served on hamburger buns.
2. Haggis
A traditional
Scottish dish, haggis is made with the minced heart, liver and lung of a sheep
mixed with onion, spices, oatmeal, salt and stock, and boiled in the sheep's
stomach for a few hours. Larousse Gastronomique, a popular encyclopedia of
gastronomic delights, claims that haggis has "an excellent nutty texture
and delicious savory flavor."
3. Bugs
The practice of
eating insects for food is called entomophily and is fairly common in many
parts of the world, with the exceptions of Europe and North America. It is not

spiders and worms on the streets of Bangkok, Thailand. Insects are high in

dead. Live baby octopus are sliced up and seasoned with sesame oil. The
tentacles are still squirming when this dish is served and, if not chewed
carefully, the tiny suction cups can stick to the mouth and throat. This is not
a dish for the fainthearted.
5.Balut
It is a
fertilized duck or chicken egg with a nearly-developed embryo that is boiled
and eaten in the shell. It is easily one of the strangest foods in the world.
